About Us

The National Network for Translation is part of the Routes into Languages programme, a governmental initiative funded the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

The National Network for Translation actively engages with national and international communities in order to address the following issues:

  • National shortage of first language English translators and interpreters
  • Concentration on Western European Languages in current HE translation course provision
  • Low national profile of careers in translation
  • Need to develop stronger cooperation between course providers and potential employers

Since the start of Routes 1 and during the first year of Routes 2, the National Network for Translation has:

  • Generated promotional material and organised career events locally and nationally
  • Developed and rolled out module templates for non-Western European languages in translation
  • Increased synergy between the education sector and employers
  • Organised training events and staff development events
  • Promoted model about how to implement a graduate scheme in individual institutions
